Ninfa, declared Natural monument by Regional Law in 1976, is located in Cisterna di Latina and Sermoneta territories. It is a medieval city where many suggestive testimonies like part of the castle, the walls, the town hall completely restored and remains of churches and civil buildings still exist. Ninfa is, above all, a magnificent natural oasis. Unique in the world, where once upon a time there was a marsh. The history of this place started in the middle of VIII century when the Emperor of Costantinopoli donated it to Pope Zaccaria. Since then, became property of powerful families like the Conti di Tuscolo the Frangipane. The city was successively destroyed by Federico Barbarossa before passing under the pontificate of Innocenzo III, to the Conti di Ceccano and the Annibadi and.In the end passed to the Caetani family who, with the election of the Pope Bonifacio VIII , Benedetto Caetani (1294), gave the city a powerful period. The city was destroyed again in 1382 and completely abandoned. Gelasio Caetani, son of Onorato and Ada, of British origins, in 1920 gave a new start to the city, thanks to important interventions to rebuild it. Later Roffredo Caetani and his wife Marguerite Chapin (American), took care of the garden. Lelia, with her husband Huben Howard opened the gardens. Initially to selected people, later to the public. At that time, the Caetani foundation was instituted and they still today manage the Gardens and the Rovine di Ninfa. |
