Ancient Cori was located on the stratum of the Monti Lepini. According to latin authors, Cori was founded by Trojan. Virgil, in the Eneide attributes the foundation of Cory to the Kings of Albalonga. According to Plinio fu Dardano, founder of Trojans, the city was restored by Corace di Argo who also named it.
Cato the Censor, gave us the first testimony of existence of the city. He declared that Cori, at the end of VI century BC, was part of the Latin Prisci. Because of the Volsci threat, Latin and Romans, stipulated an alliance under the FOEDUS CASSIANUM. The Volsci started to invade the Pontina region around 500 BC.
It seems that Cori resisted initially. Successively, after an alliance with the Volsci, fought against Rome. When the Volsci threat ended, the Romans dissolved the alliance. Relatively to the social war, Lucano refers that Cori supported Silla, the reason why Mario destroyed it. When Agusto divided the Italian territory into regions and prefectures, Cori was under the PRAEFECTUS URBIS jurisdiction.
With the fall of the Roman Empire, during the Barbaric invasions, the city decayed as well as most of Italian centres. Cori can be considered a monumental city starting from its vertical urbane structure ending with the acropolis. Cori can be principally divided in two main parts: Cori “a monte” (at the top) and Cori “a valle” (at the bottom)
